SIGNIS Nigeria secures radio licenses for some Nigerian Dioceses

Port Harcourt, December 1, 2021 (SIGNIS Nigeria). During the 2021 SIGNIS Nigeria convention, some Catholic Diocese were announced to have successfully acquired the license to operate Radio Maria, a specialized radio broadcast with programming mostly consisting of traditional Catholic worship, music, and teaching. Some Radio Maria stations also air a mix of traditional and contemporary Catholic music, along with various talk and educational programs, discussing the Catholic faith, with frequent recitals of the Holy Rosary, novenas, and Masses etc.

According to the announcement made by the president of SIGNIS Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Dr. Patrick Alumuku, at the 2021 SIGNIS Nigeria convention of all Catholic media workers held in Port Harcourt, West Africa. Fr Alumuku said the license granted to Port Harcourt Diocese, is one of the 10 that was recently secured by SIGNIS Nigeria, adding that more dioceses and archdioceses will still be added to the growing list in the next phase of application.

“With the help of World Family Radio, we have just secured 10 licenses for dioceses and archdioceses of which Port Harcourt is one of them, and we intend to apply for more licenses in the next phase”, he said.

The SIGNIS Nigeria President, said in addition to the licenses already secured, ongoing efforts to enlarge the membership scope of SIGNIS in the country to include associations active in radio, television, ICT, social media and graphics. He reiterated the need for bishops, priests and laity who have the required resources to join hands in ensuring adequate funding of the Church’s media operations across the archdioceses and dioceses in the country.

Fr Alumuku also explained that SIGNIS remains the only umbrella body of all the associations and groups of Catholic media professionals working in every media platform, adding that the target of SIGNIS Nigeria is to ensure that all the professionals work in synergy to make Christ better known in the world through their work.
